This week, I went back a few decades to watch an old favorite, Lionheart.
Summary
“Lionheart” is a 1990 American martial arts film directed by Sheldon Lettich and starring Jean-Claude Van Damme as the protagonist, Lyon Gaultier. The film follows Lyon, a French Foreign Legion soldier who deserts his post in North Africa after learning that his brother has been severely injured in a drug deal gone wrong. Upon arriving in the U.S., Lyon discovers that his brother has passed away, leaving behind his widow, Hélène, played by Lisa Pelikan, and their young daughter, Nicole, played by Ashley Johnson.
To support them, Lyon becomes involved in an underground fighting circuit run by Cynthia, portrayed by Deborah Rennard. Cynthia manipulates Lyon into competing in brutal, no-holds-barred street fights, arranging high-stakes matches for her wealthy clientele. Alongside Lyon is Joshua, a hustler and fight promoter, played by Harrison Page, who becomes his friend and helps him navigate the dangerous world of underground fighting.
As Lyon fights to earn money for his family, he faces a series of increasingly powerful opponents, culminating in a final battle that tests his strength and determination. The film showcases Van Damme’s martial arts skills and became one of his early successes in Hollywood.
5 Most Memorable Scenes
1. Lyon’s Desert Escape: Early in the film, Lyon Gaultier makes a daring escape from the French Foreign Legion in North Africa. This scene sets the tone for the film, as it showcases Lyon’s resourcefulness and determination to get to his family, marking the beginning of his journey to the U.S. It’s a gripping sequence that captures his willingness to do whatever it takes to help his loved ones.
2. First Underground Fight: Lyon’s initiation into the underground fighting circuit is one of the film’s most intense scenes. He steps into an unsanctioned street fight for the first time, showcasing his martial arts skills and adaptability in the raw, brutal environment. The suspense of whether he can hold his own in this new world keeps viewers on edge, and his physical prowess is put on full display.
3. The Pool Fight: One of the most iconic fights in the film takes place around an empty swimming pool. Lyon faces off against a tough opponent in a unique, dangerous environment. The choreography here is both creative and intense, making the location an essential part of the battle, adding another layer of suspense as Lyon fights his way through unexpected challenges.
4. Training Montage: In classic action-movie fashion, there’s a memorable training montage that sees Lyon preparing for his upcoming battles. This scene highlights both his physical transformation and his mental resolve as he trains to become stronger and more skilled, with the backdrop of caring for his family adding emotional weight.
5. Final Fight: The climax of the film features Lyon in a final, high-stakes battle against a seemingly unbeatable opponent. The tension is high as Lyon’s personal and emotional stakes come to a head in this fight. It’s a dramatic scene where Lyon’s grit, heart, and fighting spirit truly shine, offering a satisfying and action-packed resolution to the story.
These scenes encapsulate the blend of action, heart, and tension that makes Lionheart a standout in Jean-Claude Van Damme’s career.
Themes
Lionheart explores several key themes, which add depth to its action-driven narrative:
1. Family and Sacrifice: At the heart of Lionheart is Lyon’s deep commitment to his family. The entire plot is driven by his desire to protect and provide for his brother’s widow and niece. His willingness to desert the Foreign Legion and risk his own life in dangerous underground fights underscores the theme of sacrifice. The film portrays the lengths to which someone will go to care for and defend their loved ones, especially in the face of adversity.
2. Honor and Redemption: Lyon’s journey is not just about physical survival; it’s also about redemption. He is trying to atone for not being there for his brother and wants to make things right. His participation in underground fights is driven by honor, not by a desire for personal gain. Throughout the film, Lyon consistently upholds his own moral code, even in the violent world of illegal fighting, demonstrating that honor can persist even in the harshest environments.
3. Class Struggles and Exploitation: The film sheds light on the divide between the wealthy elite who sponsor and bet on the underground fights, and the fighters themselves, who often come from disadvantaged backgrounds. The affluent characters, like Cynthia, exploit the desperation of fighters like Lyon for their own entertainment and profit. This theme highlights the power dynamics at play, with the rich taking advantage of the struggles of those in less fortunate circumstances.
4. Perseverance and Resilience: Lyon’s journey is one of relentless perseverance. No matter how dire the situation or how powerful the opponent, he refuses to give up. This theme is central to many action films, but in Lionheart, it’s particularly poignant because Lyon’s motivation is driven by love for his family. His resilience is not just physical, but emotional and moral as well, as he continuously faces obstacles and remains true to his goals.
5. Loyalty and Friendship: The theme of loyalty is explored through the relationships Lyon forms, particularly with Joshua, the hustler who becomes his ally. Despite initial skepticism, Joshua comes to respect Lyon’s sense of honor and becomes one of his strongest supporters. This loyalty contrasts with the greed and betrayal of other characters in the fight circuit, showing that true friendship can emerge even in the most unlikely circumstances.
These themes help elevate Lionheart beyond just a typical martial arts action movie, giving it emotional depth and a sense of purpose behind the intense fight scenes.
Personal Review
Lionheart has been one of my old favorites for years, and revisiting it recently reminded me just how much I love this film. From the very first scene, I was hooked all over again. Jean-Claude Van Damme, in one of his earliest roles, delivered everything I could have hoped for: high-octane action, thrilling fight sequences, and a surprising amount of heart. Watching him in his prime was an absolute treat, and you could tell even back then that he was going to become a huge action star.
The fight scenes in Lionheart are absolutely packed with tension and excitement. Every punch, every kick had me gripping the edge of my seat. Whether Lyon was fighting in an empty swimming pool or on the street, the choreography was amazing, and Van Damme’s martial arts skills were on full display. Each fight felt unique and intense, and I found myself rooting for Lyon every step of the way. It’s one of those films that gets your adrenaline pumping and keeps you glued to the screen.
But what really makes Lionheart stand out is its emotional depth. The scenes where Lyon interacts with his family—his brother’s widow and niece—are heartfelt and touching. His motivation to protect and provide for them adds so much more weight to the story. There were moments where it genuinely broke my heart, watching him struggle to help them while being so far removed from the life he once knew. This emotional layer made the film all the more enjoyable for me because it wasn’t just about the fighting; it was about the lengths one man would go to for his loved ones.
Lyon’s bond with his family grounded the film, and even in the most brutal fight scenes, you never lose sight of why he’s doing it. The stakes felt personal and real, which is what sets Lionheart apart from other action movies of the time. It wasn’t just mindless violence; there was a deeper emotional current running through it, and that’s what made the film so powerful for me.
I can’t recommend Lionheart enough for anyone who loves action movies, especially those with a strong dose of family love and loyalty. Van Damme shines in this role, and even after all these years, the film holds up as one of his best. It’s not just about the action, though there’s plenty of that—it’s about heart, sacrifice, and the bonds that tie us together. For anyone looking for a classic action film with an emotional punch, Lionheart is a must-watch. It’s a film that will always have a special place in my heart, and I think anyone who loves action with a deeper story will feel the same way.
For next week’s film, I’ll be headng to Japan, here’s a quick summary:
A heartwarming story that follows the journey of two young people navigating the complexities of love, friendship, and personal growth. Set against the backdrop of a bustling city, the film delicately explores the emotions that come with growing up, facing one’s fears, and discovering unexpected connections. Through diary entries, the characters reflect on their experiences, weaving a touching narrative that resonates with the bittersweet nature of adolescence. The film offers moments of introspection, charm, and quiet beauty, making it a memorable tale of self-discovery and human connection.
